The Apples Are All Talking Now (And I Hope The Trees Are Listening) 2024
Tree - Wood, Metal, Plastic, Expanding Foam, Fabric, Acrylic Spray Paint
Apples - Air Dry clay, Poster Paints
Soundscape - Community Voices of Woodrow and Redditch
This installation consists of three parts - a large mixed media tree sculpture, a soundscape and many small clay apple sculptures. The tree sculpture represents the way in which our mental wellbeing can be hard to navigate and at times might make us feel a sense of unease or discomfort but that it can also be stable, functional and intriguing nonetheless. The many apple sculptures that accompany the tree were made by the dozens of community members who attended our workshops and drop-in sessions. Their unique expressions and creativity are displayed through the range of faces and styles of apple that were made. The soundscape is composed of a series of different conversations recorded with members of the Woodrow and Redditch community discussing how they deal with their mental health, their hopes for the community and how we can work together to listen, speak up and be heard by those around us. The atmospheric recordings were recorded throughout Woodrow Centre.
WIth thanks to Calvin and the team at Reimagine Redditch, Brenda and Sadie from Ahead of Wellbeing, all those who donated materials for various parts of the installation, those who voiced their thoughts from the community and finally Carlie and Community representatives of Woodrow.
